Peeling the Onion

Sometimes an old book is a better balm for the soul than chocolate and good friends and kisses. I’d forgotten what it was like to read through the stress, not just around it. Reading about aching characters solidifies and legitimises your own feelings; you ache with them and everything slots into place. I read Wendy Orr’s Peeling the Onion over and over as a teenager struggling with her Opa’s protracted illness; even as an adult it knits things together and legitimises them in a way I’d forgotten was so helpful.
